Spekulatius: How to Get Some Love from Your Email List with German Spiced Cookies…

One of the White family holiday traditions is to give away Spekulatius cookies to family and friends and gifts…

In case you don’t know, these are small, short dough spiced cookies that are common in the Christmas season, especially in the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium (where my wife spent her teenage years).

Every year about this time, she picks up several cases at a local store and starts handing packages out to virtually anyone we’ve had contact with over the year. Church friends, local business folk, the mail lady, the garbage man, etc.

It’s a small thing, but it’s always very well received–usually because the bag doesn’t last long. Once you dunk a Spekulatius cookie into a glass of cold milk, your life (and your waistline) will never be the same.

As I was watching her load up the mini-van for another trip around town, it struck me–shouldn’t we be doing the same thing for our email lists?

Of course, I’m not talking about seeking out everyone and handing them a bag of spiced cookies. While it would probably score you big points with some, you’d most likely get a few restraining orders as well.

But we CAN thank them for being loyal readers, right?

Seriously–if we would take a few moments to write a thank you email to our list, I think it would go a long way towards building the whole know/like/trust factor.

And it doesn’t have to be “persuasive” or “direct responsive” or any of those other marketing type things. It just has to be HONEST. Straightforward. From the heart.

Heck, if you REALLY want to thank them, you can even throw in a nice little freebie as well. Think free shipping on their next order, or coupon for a certain percentage off (and not just for the holidays, but for anytime).

So take some time to say “thanks” to your list this year. They’ll love you for it, and you’ll be doing a good thing. 🙂

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you who support Email Copy Guru. May we always be thankful for our many blessings, and to those who provide them.
